About Us - The Fish Wrap
The Rockmart Journal
The Rockmart Journal, distributed to 3,400
households each Wednesday, is the oldest continuously published
newspaper in Rockmart, Ga. The Rockmart Journal features "local news" to
subscribers who acknowledge the value of "small town" atmosphere. The
first issue of The Rockmart Journal was published in July, 1930 and was
located on East Elm Street in a building that later housed the Economy
Ice Cream Co. It was founded by Fred Fitzgerald along with his
father-in-law, A. N. Johnson, Piedmont, Ala. He continued as publisher
until 1939 when he was succeeded by H. F. Beall and later Cecil D.
Franklin, who acquired the newspaper in the early 1940s. Later, E. C.
Sanders became a silent partner in 1946 and acquired remaining interest
from Hirman Brown, Cartersville. Sanders became publisher in 1948 and
moved location of the business to South Marble Street. The Rockmart
Journal was acquired by News Publishing Company in 1980 and was located
on South Piedmont Avenue. In 1998, the newspaper was moved into a modern
building at 238 S. Piedmont Ave. The editor at that time was the late
Aubrey "Orbie" Thaxton. Today, it is a part of News Publishing Company,
Burgett Mooney, owner. Lowell Vickers is the current editor/publisher.
Staff and all operations of The Journal relocated to the offices of its
sister newspaper, The Cedartown Standard, located at 213 Main St.,
Cedartown in January 2012.
The Cedartown Standard
The Cedartown Standard is a weekly publication
covering the news and events in and around Cedartown and Polk County,
Ga. Every Wednesday, the Standard is home-delivered to 3,900 households
in Cedartown and the surrounding area. Having began in 1869, the
Standard is the oldest, continuously published paper in Polk County.
Together with their sister publications, the Standard produces three
special sections each year, including the Polk County Pigskin Preview,
published in August; the award-winning Past Times Magazine, also
published in August and February’s annual Polk County Review and
Forecast. In addition to these sections, the Standard also produces a
special issue each year honoring our local high school and college
graduates. The Standard office is located in the notable Coca-Cola
building on downtown Main Street, right in the heart of the city’s
historic district. Since our early roots back in the 1800s, the Standard
continues to grow and meet the information needs of our readers. We’re a
community-centered newspaper and we’ve remained throughout the times
because of the loyalty of our readers and the leadership of our parent
company, News Publishing Company. We thank you for visiting our Web site
and hope it proves as a testament that the Cedartown Standard is
focused on meeting the ever-changing needs of our readers and that our
vision is moving right along with this new age of information.
