Primary

Today (Tuesday, August 12) is primary election day here in America's Dairyland, and I am working at the polls for the Town of Delton. We have to be there from 6:30 a.m. until after the polls close at 8:00 p.m. and then until all the ballots are tabulated, verified, certified and all the paperwork done and signed by all the workers. I usually don't get home until 10:00 or later.

At some of the polls, people work in shifts, but Delton doesn't do it that way. We don't even get to leave for lunch. They bring in hamburgers or something, which we pay for ourselves, and we eat while on duty. During presidential elections this is a hassle because it is so busy. These smaller elections are a different story,  of course.

In the middle of September we will have a vote on funding for the Wisconsin Dells school district. They are asking for a new high school and the cost is $30,000,000. This has already been voted down once, but they are coming back with another  proposal. I expect to work that day, too, although it is a more restricted issue and there will be fewer voters. We will still have to be there from early until late, however.

As for the November election, I told them I would prefer not to work but will be available if needed. Which means, most likely, I will get to work then, too.

So that's all I have to offer today. Hope you are all happy, well, free and safe.

Delton needs to have a vote on the poor treatment of its workers!
