A post on another blog this morning called to mind an incident some years ago at a provincial chapter. (Religious communities like the Discalced Carmelites have regular assemblies [called chapters] -- in our case, every three year -- where superiors are elected and policies enacted.) I do not recall what issue we were discussing, but in the middle of a rather heated debate, one of the brothers said something that struck me as rather profound:
"I am afraid we are going to do all the wrong things for all the right reasons."
It bears pondering in these contentious times.
