Cooper's hawk

This afternoon I saw a Cooper's hawk in the backyard. We have lots of red-tailed hawks in the area, but this was the first time I saw a Cooper's to recognize it. It has a very distinctive profile and black bands on the tail. They are small-to-medium and prey mostly on other birds. In fact, they are notorious for spying on bird feeders to catch birds unaware. That was what the one I saw was doing, although I did not see it capture anything before flying off into the woods.

We expect a bit of snow after midnight and into tomorrow -- total of 2 to 6 inches. If the activity around the bird feeders is any indication, I would say more rather than less.
