Birds, bees and wee beasties

Tom was suitably delighted by the flamingos -- and Greg was suitably surprised. Barb Baker, a friend who lives up the road on Christmas Mountain, rode her bike by yesterday afternoon and sent Tom an e-mail asking just how many pink flamingos a man needs. He told her 473. We went into Reedsburg for Mexican food and stopped by Pamida just to see if they had more in stock. Fortunately for Barb, they didn't.

As for the bees -- the flowers are attracting bees, but the wasps are also trying to build nests around the house, under the eaves and in the nooks and corners of the deck. I sprayed a couple of nests yesterday, and Tom hit some this morning. The yellow jackets have nests in the ground in the yard, too.

Yesterday afternoon when I came in, Tom and Greg were sitting on the deck finishing up their post-convention conversation. Sundance was running around the living room when I opened the door, which I first put down to a stranger being around, although the cats are normally not afraid of people. Then I realized she was not just running, she was chasing -- another mouse! She ran it into my room, then down into the basement. She came back upstairs about fifteen minutes later, but without a mouse. I praised her for hunting it, though, and then closed the door to the basement. No need to let it come back upstairs by that route.
