Winter comfort

I realize that the traditional beginning of winter is over a month away, but there is a reason people are talking about Januvember.(Novuary?) We have had temps down into the upper teens at night -- and my sister-in-law tells me that they have been even colder in the Texas Panhandle than we have in our part of Wisconsin. The forecast is for us to hit 8 or 9 next Monday night for a low. [-13.5 C]

We have had some snow -- flurries, but enough to make things whiter if not totally white. Here are a couple of shots of the back yard.

For some reason, the back yard always shows snow better than the front, at least until we get a serious snowfall. Then all bets are off.

Tom has to replenish the bird feeder and the suet today. Suet is comfort food for birds when it gets like this, and the woodpeckers love it.

We have unconsciously shifted to winter comfort foods for ourselves, too. Last night I made chicken pot pie -- NOT a frozen one -- with southern biscuit topping. Tuesday night, Tom made spaghetti with meat sauce. I made chicken burritos on Monday (flour tortillas). And Tom made gumbo on Sunday (rice). Saturday we had chicken bruschetta with angel hair pasta. (I know, we do eat well, huh?)  So the carb count for the week is already over the top. Since we tend to eat leftovers for lunch and sometimes for breakfast, we have been very comfortable -- but maybe a bit like overstuffed chairs are comfortable.

What a beautiful back yard! I was curious if the birds stick around when it's so cold.

Looks like a good spot for snow angels to be made. :-)

We have a huge backyard, most of it not yard but woods. We live on a piece of property that was part of the original 1845 land grant to Tom's ancestors. The rest was all sold off, but we have about 35 acres all together.
