Half amen. I think, many times, churches do a better job caring for the poor, orphaned, and widowed than the government does. In those cases, I don't think tax exemption is privilege. But, I completely understand the point. Gay marriage is a right, not a privilege.

Kirstin, Following up on John's point, part of the idea today certainly is that churches use their resources to care for those in need. Today, however, church funds are often used for other, directly political things -- like fighting marriage equality. So it is at best a gray area.
